Iron and Teeth Issues

Hi,

I wanted to share an observation I’ve found in my clinical practice.

Functional dentistry looks at the whole patient. When I see teeth and gum issues we need to find investigations that dig deeper.

One of the most common deficiencies people experience today is low iron.

Low iron depletes your energy. It makes you feel tired, even after a whole night’s rest.

It also increases your risk of dental decay and gum disease.

I recently wrote about the possible link between teeth grinding and iron. As the carrier of oxygen in the body, low iron depletes your oxygen during the night, which is already a problem in people who snore, or mouth breathe during sleep.

So, what do we do about it?

Iron testing & Supplementation

One of the problems with testing, is that it can sometimes miss the actual cause of iron depletion.

Low ferritin for example is an important marker, and I ROUTINELY see people with scores under 20. It should be roughly about 80-100 at a minimum.

Most doctors will prescribe iron supplements, but the issue is that you have to absorb it. Iron is an element that comes with many other co-factors that all work together for the body to use them.

If you don’t absorb iron well, you may get a condition called iron overload.

5 factors that can affect iron absorption are:

1) Vitamin A

2) Copper

3) Vitamin B12

4) Folate

5) Vitamin C

These are just some of the main ones, but in reality there are far more nutrients that affect iron utilisation.

That’s why supplementation doesn’t always work.

If you’re unsure, it might be time to check your iron levels with a full iron panel.

I’m going to send further information on how to read these.

Boosting Iron Levels

Most of the co-factors that assist iron absorption are found in beef organs.

In my book The Dental Diet, I described the strategies to increase your liver intake to help alleviate these problems.

However, I know it’s difficult to find, cook, and eat liver regularly enough as you need, and if you have low iron, you need to do this for a long time!

We’ve found 100% Australian Grass-Fed Dessicated Beef organs for my family and patients as effective ways to keep nutrient levels high.

I find the combination of liver with heart and kidney gives a potent combination that will boost most nutrient deficiencies.

If you’re in Australia and New Zealand you can purchase the combination.

For you and your family, taking these capsules daily will fortify you against the risk of iron deficiency.
